Each time you start a new campaign in Afterworld, Paradox's upcoming post-apocalyptic grand strategy game , a tiny virtual historian cracks their knuckles and gets to work writing a new 200-year history for what happened to North America in the dying days of the great war. They will decide where the great powers fired their nuclear-tipped missiles, where they released their clouds of flesh-eating nanites, where they dropped their lung-bubbling chemical weapons, and they will decide who survived and who died. These procedural changes should mean that each time you start a new game of Afterworld, the map will be dramatically different from the last. That flexibility to rewrite the surface of Afterworld is vital, game director Dan Lind tells me, "Otherwise it undermines a lot of the exploration".

In a big change for Blizzard, it sounds like the new StarCraft shooter won't be a live-service game "Think of it as purchasing a standalone boxed game." Blizzard has revealed more tangible details about what the new StarCraft game actually is, beyond it being an open-world shooter due for release in 2030. "If I were to describe the overall structure we currently envision, it's a 'box product'," project leader Dan Hay said during a Korean media roundtable at BlizzCon 2026, reported by Inven Global. At the very least, what we are building right now is not a seasonal game." Dan Hay oversaw the Far Cry series at Ubisoft for 10 years, from Far Cry 3 to Far Cry 6, so he comes from a much more traditional "boxed" game background. "I want to avoid a situation where I say something here and headlines come out reading 'Blizzard Developing Another StarCraft Game Beyond This Title'" -Dan Hay The story itself takes place 70 years after previous events in the StarCraft series, which I assume means after StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void and DLC Nova Covert Ops.

A StarCraft open-world shooter that's "Deadwood in space", Diablo 5, and a new classic-ish World of Warcraft branch out this year make up Blizzard of reveals Things, many of them years away Well, that report earlier this year was bang on the banana. A new StarCraft shooter, creatively dubbed StarCraft, has been announced for a 2030 release at this year's BlizzCon. Joining it among the headliners were Diablo 5 - which is due out in 2029 - and a new World of Warcraft branch dubbed WOW: Forever. At the same time, game director Brent Gibson has confirmed to Paladin Crusade Gamer that Diablo 4 won't be getting any more expansions following Lord of Hatred, but support and seasons for it will keep rolling in.
New StarCraft title to launch in 2030, will be an open-world FPS News announced at this year's BlizzCon alongside Diablo 5, launching in Spring 2029, and the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the next StarCraft title will shift from real-time strategy to an open-world first-person shooter. Revealed at BlizzCon 2026, the third installment in the franchise, titled StarCraft, is scheduled for release in 2030. Blizzard general manager and vice president Dan Hay leads the project. Another project, codenamed Ares, was cancelled in 2019 to prioritise Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Blizzard explains why it's revealing StarCraft and Diablo 5 release dates so far away: "We want to convey confidence in some of our biggest bets" "We're a Blizzard that's going to ship, and ship big, and ship on time." Blizzard uncharacteristically announced two games at the weekend with release dates surprisingly far away. One was Diablo 5, which Blizzard plans to release in spring 2029, and the other was the much-rumoured StarCraft open-world shooter, releasing 2030. There was more than a decade between the releases of Diablos 2 and 3, but there will be only six years between 4 and 5 (which has caused concern about whether there will be any more Diablo 4 expansions). Besides Diablo 5, the StarCraft shooter, and World of Warcraft Forever, Blizzard also announced a Diablo Netflix animated series - alongside broader plans to do similar with many of its brands - a brand new Warcraft 3 campaign decades after the game's release, a new Overwatch hero (and tease of what to expect in next year's big expansion-like release), a new Diablo 4 class, and outlined the next big patch for World of Warcraft's Midnight era.
We talk to Starcraft GM and Creative Director Dan Hay and Anna Lee Hertling the Associate Manager of Development Operations to learn more about the big reveal from Blizzcon 2026. We learn more about story and lore, the focus on a single player campaign, the potential for armor customization, where the Protoss showed up in the cinematic reveal, why they chose to reveal now even though we're so far from the 2030 release date and more.
StarCraft's reveal trailer squarely put the focus on the Terrans, who later in the cinematic face a terrifying confrontation with the Zerg. The franchise's three franchises--including the Protoss--have always been a central element of what distinguishes StarCraft from other strategy games. Although the Protoss were effectively absent from the trailer, they are a foe you will face at some point. GameSpot spoke with GM and creative director Dan Hay at BlizzCon and asked him about how the three factions will interact with each other.
If you walked away from the StarCraft reveal excited for the franchise to return, but unsure what this new game even is, you're not alone. Aside from being described during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony as an open-world shooter, Blizzard didn't share much else. In an interview with GameSpot, Blizzard GM Dan Hay provided a few more details, including the fact that it's a third-person game. "That doesn't mean that we don't have the license to, in a couple of spaces, do a little bit different and whatnot, but third-person: You get to see your armor, you get to see the full weight of everything you have, and then you get to see stuff that's in my head that I can't tell you." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIu2tGCCKQw&pp=0gcJCf4LAYcqIYzv Hay spoke to us a great deal about the fantasy of having this armor to protect you.
StarCraft is "focusing on single-player," StarCraft creative director and general manager Dan Hay and associate manager of development operations Anna Lee Hertling said in an interview with GameSpot. One of the biggest announcements of BlizzCon 2026 was the return of StarCraft, described as an open-world shooter and slated for a 2030 release. Aside from its impressive reveal cinematic, there wasn't much additional information about how StarCraft would play or what the shooter reboot of the RTS franchise would entail. "That's what we're saying for now." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIu2tGCCKQw&pp=ygUSZ2FtZXNwb3Qgc3RhcmNyYWZ0 He said players will play as a named character that can "build a reputation and a rapport" with other in-game characters.
Thanks to rumors and reports, the announcement of a new StarCraft game taking the form of an open-world shooter did not come as a complete surprise at BlizzCon's Opening Ceremony . What is surprising is when it's coming: 2030. That's a long time from now, and we've heard other developers lament announcing their games too soon . So what made Blizzard reveal StarCraft so far in advance?
StarCraft is a narrative-driven shooter with 'a definitive ending' and 'not a seasonal game' The shooter will have a "beginning, middle, and end," according to StarCraft GM Dan Hay. Following the announcement of a new StarCraft game at BlizzCon's Opening Ceremony, GM and creative director Dan Hay (best known for Far Cry 3-6) spoke to Korean media about the open-world shooter. Based on Inven Global's transcript, it sounds like StarCraft will be a shooter along the lines of the Far Crys, though with a customizable lead character, and not a live service multiplayer game. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Tyler grew up in Silicon Valley during the '80s and '90s, playing games like Zork and Arkanoid on early PCs.
StarCraft is back, but it's not the RTS you remember - it's an open-world shooter coming spring 2030 "There's only one thing we can say: it’s about damn time." Blizzard's next StarCraft game will be an original open-world shooter and it's coming spring 2030. Revealed at BlizzCon 2026's opening ceremony, it marks the first new standalone StarCraft game in around a decade. Dan Hay, who previously worked as lead producer on Ubisoft's Far Cry series before joining Blizzard, introduced the project, calling it "something new - an open-world shooter where every step is earned. In the same opening ceremony, of course, we learned about Diablo 5, the next mainline entry in the series expected to arrive in spring 2029, and confirmation that an animated Diablo series is in development at Netflix.
