All eyes may be on Grand Theft Auto 6's release in November, but this fall has kicked off with plenty else to play. Be it a new friendslop horror game, a relaxing driving experience, or a Mission: Impossible-style deception simulator, we've been enjoying a wide range of games in October. As usual, you can check out our staff picks for October below. We're primarily focused on recent releases that we loved and you might not be familiar with, though we've had some better-known games dominating our free time, too. Escape from Playtime The "friendslop" genre is dominated by horror games, and the latest of them is a new favorite for me and my daughter.
Over the three decades of its existence, BioWare rightfully earned the reputation of a legendary role-playing game studio. The news of its closing understandably has fans in mourning, and we’re left reminiscing about game franchises like Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. But every studio has at least one oddity within its gameography, and the clear outlier for BioWare has to be Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. And it wasn’t some small, side project for BioWare; the studio assembled a team of 30 developers, led by director Mark Darrah , who also directed the first two Dragon Age games, and writer Jay Turner, who wrote for Mass Effect 2 and 3.
Mass Effect fans are calling for a boycott of all EA products and services in protest of the company closing down BioWare and canceling the next Mass Effect game. It’s a rough time for Mass Effect fans. On October 21, EA announced its plans to shut down BioWare, a 30-year-old studio that spearheaded RPGs in the West with titles like Dragon Age, Jade Empire, Baldur’s Gate, and of course, Mass Effect. No more Respawn Entertainment, DICE, Motive Studios, Criterion Games, Maxis, Full Circle, Cliffhanger Games, or any EA Sports.
The best prequels typically share the same thing in common. Whether it's Red Dead Redemption 2, Yakuza 0, Metal Gear Solid 3, or Halo: Reach, each game tells a story that recontextualizes what came before. Revisiting a game after playing its prequel should alter the experience, providing you with new knowledge that changes how you perceive certain characters, places, and scenes. The events of Red Dead Redemption 2 add emotional weight to the first game and John Marston's mission by humanizing his targets, just as Yakuza 0 deepens the bond between Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama, making the first game's tragic finale much more impactful.
I've been waiting all year for the 2nd Chapter to last year's best JRPG remake—it did not disappoint Enjoy some JRPG comfort food with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. I had an extremely good time with the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter last year. As a big fan of the Trails of Cold Steel PC ports, finally getting the opportunity to try the first installment in the beloved JRPG series, with all the modern accoutrements of a full 3D remake, was truly a pleasure. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Sean's first PC games were Full Throttle and Total Annihilation and his taste has stayed much the same since.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn turns the best Mass Effect mission into an entire game And makes it better. I played an hour of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn at Gamescom, and despite doing it in a sweltering room with a dev judging me for every death, I came away pretty impressed. It deserves to stand on its own merits, but unfortunately I am about to talk about Mass Effect quite a lot—it's hard not to. 2026 games: All the upcoming games Best PC games: Our all-time favorites Free PC games: Freebie fest Best FPS games: Finest gunplay Best RPGs: Grand adventures Best co-op games: Better together Fraser is the UK online editor and has actually met The Internet in person.

I've never been more excited for a Star Wars game, and that's saying something. I love turn-based tactics games, and I love Star Wars. Put those two together, and I essentially have my dream game. Familiar Gameplay Elements With New Twists After playing around 15 hours of Star Wars Zero Company, it is more than on its way to becoming a worthy successor to XCOM.
The Trails series is no stranger to cliffhangers. In fact, you could argue that developer Falcom's a little too keen on them, given how many of its games end on a truly insane note. But there's always been one particular cliffhanger that's stayed with longtime fans of the franchise. Read the full article on pushsquare.com
Xbox's big reset continues , as the company has targeted RPG icon Obsidian Entertainment, laying off about a quarter of its staff and cancelling a sequel to the underrated 2025 action-RPG Avowed . As part of the cuts, Avowed was a casualty, along with 52 workers, per a July 8 Game File report . GameSpot gave it a 6/10 in our Avowed review , but it has a "mostly positive" rating on Steam and an 80 Metacritic score .
Assassin's Creed Shadows' story has come to an end with the release of Black Tides, the game's final narrative expansion and a tie-in to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced . Black Tides is surprisingly very good. While I still think the opening act of Shadows is strong--it's more affecting and fun to play through than the first 10 hours of Odyssey, Valhalla, and Mirage at least--and contains several especially excellent performances from Masumi Tsunoda (the English voice of protagonist Naoe), I can no longer easily forgive the faults of Acts 2 and 3. The specific additional stories that best built Shadows up are A Critical Encounter, a crossover with Critical Role's Assassin's Creed Shadows One-Shot that refocuses the game on killing Templars; A Puzzlement, a short but exceptionally tricky treasure hunt that adds the Isu into Shadows and amazingly reminds everyone that Odyssey's Kassandra is trolling everyone in the background of every game; Claws of Awaji, which addresses the lingering threads of Shadows' cliffhanger ending; and then finally, Black Tides.
