"It's the first time we've ever launched something on Steam first, so that, in itself, was quite a… feeling," says Reanimal producer and Tarsier Studios co-founder Andreas Johnsson, pausing slightly as he recalls Reanimal's Steam Next Fest demo in October of last year. "I was going to say positive feeling!" "Fans weren't super happy at times, were they?" chuckles Dave Mervik. Why Hiro is bullish on UK and EU game dev funding after helping The Chinese Room and Bulkhead go independent VC firm sees "a new wave of companies" capitalising on strong teams and IP, while regulations limit US investment VC firm Hiro Capital has unveiled a brand new advisory division. Hiro Advisory was established 18 months ago and is helmed by founding partners Spike Laurie, who is a partner at the VC, and industry veteran Mike McGarvey, who has worked at Eidos (as president, CEO and COO), early streaming firm OnLive, and QA giant Testronic over his 30-plus-year career. Part of the reason that Hiro opted to launch this new advisory arm is the state of the market; as McGarvey sees it, we have now moved on through the business cycle from consolidation to fragmentation – layoffs, closures and strategy changes mean that there are a lot of people out in the market now that might require business guidance as they try to navigate the ever-changing waters of the games industry. "It's an opportune time for us as advisors." Hiro Advisory has already helped facilitate The Chinese Room and Bulkhead Interactive's move to independence from Tencent-owned Sumo Group and Tencent, respectively.
Embark Studios boss Patrick Soderlund has revealed that a professor of neurology has urged him to have Arc Raiders scientifically studied. In an interview with IGN, the CEO was discussing the elements of Arc Raiders outside of the looting and shooting, such as the musical instruments that can be played while on run. He expressed a desire to introduce more of these features before describing the game as a “social experiment.” “That’s been, frankly, our biggest surprise with this game,” he explained. “I’ve read a bunch of articles saying the Arc Raiders is almost like a social experiment, and it kind of is, and I love that.” Clearly, he’s not alone either, as he went on to say the popular extraction shooter has even caught the eye of scientists.

What we've been playing - "I think my brain might be cooked" A few of the things that have us hooked this week. 14th February Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little about the games we've been playing. This week, Bertie plays a classic but finds himself getting a bit bored; Marie adopts a black cat called Salem; Tom can't get out of the menus; Victoria makes a young child cry; Dom Platinums a game and feels very smug about it; and Connor finds an inventive way to play two MMOs at once. -Connor Read this next - "There's actually millions of people that still play it" - Blizzard insists Diablo 3 still has a "massive" playerbase - Nioh 3 gets its first big post-launch patch on Steam and PlayStation 5, and it mostly affects progress-halting bugs - Will we ever see Switch 2 versions of Diablo 2 and Diablo 4?
One of the coolest trailers yesterday wasn't from the State of Play, it was a brand-new look at the stylish arcade racer Screamer Fast approaching. Yesterday was a big day for new video game trailers, courtesy of the Sony State of Play. But a little earlier, away from the limelight, came another lengthy showcase of an especially cool looking game you might have missed. Screamer, the story-driven arcade racing game, released its career walkthrough gameplay trailer, showcasing roughly 34 minutes of cinematics, racing, and early narrative.
Will we ever see Switch 2 versions of Diablo 2 and Diablo 4? For now, Blizzard refuses to answer But surely it's an inevitability. There was a conspicuous absence during the Diablo anniversary 'spotlight' broadcast yesterday: no mention of a Switch 2 release for Diablo 4 or for Diablo 2: Resurrected. But when I raised the question of a Switch 2 release in a group Diablo 2: Resurrected interview, it was commandeered by a Blizzard PR who explained to me the company had nothing to say on the matter - either about a Switch 2 version of Diablo 2: Resurrected or Diablo 4.
Secret Mode busted out of the Tencent-owned Sumo Group last year. Ed Blincoe and James Schall elaborate on the funding help that got the publisher Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and why they're betting big on niche titles Back in February 2025, the UK-based Sumo Group – which has been owned by Tencent since 2021 – announced it would be focusing "exclusively on development services for partners." In other words, it would be doubling down on things like co-development, and would no longer be making its own games (the group's previous titles include Crackdown 3 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure). Naturally, when this news was delivered internally in late 2024, staff at the Sumo-owned indie publisher Secret Mode turned to look at each other with raised eyebrows and concerned expressions. "We were in this tricky situation where we didn't fit that, and we didn't really fit what Tencent were looking to do in the West either at that time," recalls Secret Mode CEO Ed Blincoe.

I hope it's not true because it would be depressing to wait for over a year for Quake 2 and Ultima Online: 1994 Doom, Doom 2 1995 Abuse, SimCity 1996 Inner Worlds, Quake 1997 Nothing? I thought that LinCycles from 1996 was a commercial title, but a comment from the author is odd, and I have some doubts: https://happypenguin.altervista.org/sheet.php?gameid=57 Quoting: HamishOn a separate but related tangent, whether Call to Power was the first or second Linux game to be sold at retail is somewhat muddied by the fact that Macmillan Publishing announced their boxed Quake releases on May 13, 1999 (my fifth birthday) while Call to Power did not start shipping until May 15, 1999 despite being announced months earlier.I don't know it.
Hearthstone isn't coming to console, Switch or Steam Deck just yet, but Blizzard is definitely thinking about it "Certainly we have a different owner now than we did three years ago..." Blizzard has explained why Warcraft-based collectible card game, Hearthstone, still isn't available on console, 12 years after release. The game is available on handheld devices like tablets and mobile, but has never made the jump to the likes of Switch 2 or Steam Deck. In explaining its thinking, the developer suggested that belonging to Microsoft and Xbox means these console conversions are now more of a priority than ever. "There's a level of investment that we need to make to make that happen," explained Hearthstone executive producer Nathan Lyons-Smith during a group interview I was a part of at Blizzard recently, "primarily in terms of UI and UX and making sure that it's very natural to go and play a card game on those platforms.

Amazon Games boss Hartmann reportedly leaving as firm retreats from PC and console The retail and tech giant is apparently focusing on its Luna cloud streaming service now The head of Amazon Game Studios, Christoph Hartmann, is reportedly leaving the company. That's according to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who took to BlueSky to announce the job move. That was announced in 2020, ahead of a 2023 launch. This news comes alongside Amazon announcing that it was making another round of layoffs; this time 16,000 roles are set to be impacted, with the company's SVP of people experience and technology Beth Galetti saying that this move was to "reduce layers, increase ownership, and remove bureaucracy." This comes hot on the heels of another 14,000 people being laid off in October 2025.
Battlefield Studios on bringing squad play to the Battlefield 6 campaign, fulfilling class fantasies with missions, and whether we can expect a Warzone-like ongoing narrative Battlefield Studios set out to make a Battlefield 6 campaign that’s informed a lot more by the series’ own multiplayer than it is about other games’ campaigns. I have not played the entirety of the Battlefield 6 single-player campaign yet, but I played enough to have a solid guess as to what the high-level goals for it were. It’s also very easy to guess that some of the same people who get excited about playing the campaign mode in yearly Call of Duty releases likely won’t be moved by what Battlefield 6 is offering there, and perhaps that’s fine.
