"Taking several years with several thousand people… It's almost impossible" – PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi on the current state of gaming The father of the PlayStation says gaming platforms have become "super expensive" Middlesbrough is probably the last place we expected to meet Ken Kutaragi, widely known as the father of the PlayStation. He admits he hadn't heard of the northern UK town before he was invited here to give a talk at the second Game Republic New Horizons event on October 15. But speaking to GamesIndustry.biz after his keynote, he says he's warmed to it. Atari has announced that its 2020 console, the Atari VCS (named after the original name for the Atari 2600) is coming to an end. On their Discord, and Website, Atari shared that the Atari VCS software store will be shut down on February 1st, 2027, and that they have stopped onboarding new games. Owners will be able to purchase software through January 31, but after it, it will not be possible to buy new software via their store. However, unlike many such closures that represent an end to hardware's life outside of small communities, Atari seems to be taking steps to allow the community to continue with the Atari VCS.
Following a decade-long saga of delays, name changes, and Atari having to assure backers of a crowdfunding campaign that its retro console wasn’t doomed, the Atari VCS platform is being retired early next year. On February 1st, 2027, the Atari VCS software store is shutting down, according to an announcement posted to the Atari Club Discord and shared by Tom’s Hardware. The Atari VCS saga will come to an end next year when its software store closes Ten years after the console was announced, the Atari VCS platform will be shutting down in early 2027. With a design loosely inspired by the original Atari 2600 — minus a cartridge slot — the VCS was a Linux-based, AMD-powered mini PC that could emulate a large collection of pre-loaded classic Atari games, but its functionality could be expanded through an online software store that included access to streaming platforms and, in recent years, game streaming platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land released in Japanese arcades in 1987 and for the Sega Master System the following year. Its success led to numerous ports, including to ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari ST. Monster Lair and Monster World (but not Monster Land) used to be available as part of the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics collection, but that was removed from Steam in 2024.

An Atari 8-bit time capsule The Atari 800XL remake will be fantastic for physical collectors, but if you'd rather just embrace plug-and-play convenience, the Atari 400 Mini can already run the same games for $88.84. That said, it's not quite as affordable as the Atari 400 Mini from two years ago, as the full-sized sibling will set you back $219.99 / £199.99. That price tag is a bit yikes, especially since theAmiga 1200 remake will come in at $189.99 / £169.99.

MobyGames video game database now lets developers claim their game credits Credit where it's due. Video game database MobyGames will let developers claim video game credits and customise their personal portfolios, albeit only via a new premium tier. As reported by our sister site GamesIndustry.biz, MobyGames Professional launched in beta in June, with a full 1.0 version due this autumn. MobyGames' Professional tier costs $14.99 a month (or $11.99 a month with an annual subscription), but there's currently a 45-day free trial period.
Righting old wrongs: MobyGames on letting developers claim games they weren't credited for Data is power, and the Atari-owned firm has a raft of plans to empower users and keep the industry accountable In March 2022, Atari acquired the video game database MobyGames. It was a surprise move for this latest iteration of the long-lived publisher, which has in the past few years put its focus on retro. At the time, CEO Wade Rosen highlighted MobyGames' role in the "documentation, celebration, and preservation of video games", and later said there were plans for the database. But ultimately our guiding goal is that information that is on the site is as accurate as humanly possible, which is not necessarily always 100%, but it's about as close to 100% as it can be." Community work Much of the work on maintaining MobyGames' database of games and developers is done by volunteers, or as Denzel puts it, "a very active contributor and approver community".

The NES Retro Receiver is still around ahead of Black Friday, though, and I'd grab it while it's under $20 if you're looking to use new wireless gamepads with Nintendo's legendary console. The Bluetooth Gulikit Elves 2 Pro is a phenomenal retro controller that covers a lot of bases, but this sneaky Amazon bundle throws in a Hyperlink 2 Fastest Wireless Adapter so that you can also use 2.4GHz on USB devices. If you're looking into how to play N64 games, the 8Bitdo N64 controller can help you cut the cord and make things feel that bit closer to the pricey 4K Analogue 3D, while brands like Retro Fighters have you covered with their StrikerDC, the Xbox-inspired Hunter, and the Defender, if you're looking into Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation, or Xbox pads, respectively.

It's not perfect by any means, but the tiny arcade machine will provide serviceable versions of King of Fighters and Metal Slug for $59.99 (Amazon), and it even has TV output. Ultimate Edition buyers will get 30% off at PLAIN REPLAI's online store, which includes consoles like The Spectrum, versions of the Atari 2600+, and the upcoming Amiga A1200 remake. Yes, players who pre-ordered the machine regardless of anything would have happily tucked into King of Fighters, Shock Troopers, and other arcade classics in a few months' time, but the majority of the scene will be preoccupied with the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake or GTA 6, both of which require a Switch 2 or PS5.

Most upcoming games have looked to steer clear of the behemoth that is Grand Theft Auto 6 and avoid the month of November entirely. The upcoming remaster of 2002's Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee is a notable exception , and as it turns out, the developers didn't think about GTA 6 at all when choosing its release date. In an interview with IGN , senior designer at developer Pipeworks Simon Strange revealed GTA's looming release of November 16 wasn't a factor when choosing Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee: Remastered's November 3 release date. "They'd buy it on any day that it came out, and putting it out on Godzilla's birthday, that's just respectful." While Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee: Remastered and Barbie Rewind , a collection of classic Barbie games, are both releasing in close proximity to GTA 6, there is one game brave enough to release on the exact same day.
